Ambition: Develop and execute a course which attracts good groups of researchers involved in on-farm and on-station poultry genetic improvement. The course aims to contribute to increased collaboration between the participants and contribute to realizing the ambitions of the ACGG program: increase small holder chicken productivity in Africa. Participants in the course will become familiar with the ACGG program and establish a network. Participants are expected to benefit from not only the material covered in the course but also the network while working on their research project in their home country.
After following this course PhD candidates will:
* Understand the components of a breeding programme;
* Understand the elements involved in setting up a breeding goal;
* Have a basic understanding of selection index theory to predict the expected rate of genetic gain;
* Understand the factors that determine the rate of genetic gain resulting from a breeding programme;
* Understand the concept of crossbreeding and impact of crossbreeding on the breeding program;
* Have a clear understanding that animal breeding from smallholders is different from animal breeding in developed countries;
* Be able to design a program to deliver genetic improvement realised in a nucleus herd to smallholders; and
* Be able to present the contribution of their own research project to improving the livelihood of resource-poor smallholders.

The course aims at participants with an interest in breeding programs for developing countries. The course will focus on poultry but is also relevant for other species. Participants are required to have a basic understanding of animal breeding. Preferable participants have an MSc degree related to animal breeding and genetics. Participants will be asked to study e-learning material covering the basics of animal breeding. The maximum number of participants is 40.

A reader will be prepared covering papers/documents spanning the domain of the course. Participants will get access to e-learning module to prepare themselves for the course.

In addition to the 15 participants from Tanzania, Nigeria and Ethiopia (ACGG project countries), we are accepting 20 international students for the course.
The course costs a total of 555 USD + air ticket. The 555 USD covers accommodation (7 nights + breakfast)), conferencing (including lunch), field visits, and other logistics.
