This study evaluated the sustainability of the farming systems by assessing the constraints to production and by evaluating agronomic and socioeconomic performances at farm level. Subsequently, optimized solutions were explored for the main constraints affecting the systems.
The results revealed that the sustainability of the farming systems is constrained by low agricultural productivity, soil fertility, labour efficiency and economic return associated with improper crop rotation, inappropriate soil management practices, shortage of feed, labour- and economically inefficient farm practices and labour shortage. However, there is ample scope to simultaneously optimize the economic, social and environmental sustainability either through optimization of management within current farm resources, or through using improved technologies. Therefore, each farm can have a wide range of optimized solutions mainly through introduction of improved technologies and subsequent redesigning of the farm managements which can be an important approach to increase and sustain agricultural production.
