AlgaePARC Wageningen UR

AlgaePARC open workshop

Join the open workshop of AlgaePARC to catch up with the latest developments in algae research at Wageningen UR. In this workshop we will present our vision, activities, achievements and future plans. Also, based on recent research, we will give an estimate of algae production costs and an outlook on business perspectives for algal products.

Microalgae as promising feedstock

Microalgae are considered one of the most promising feedstocks for sustainable production of commodities such as food, feed, chemicals, materials and biofuels. Microalgae do not need to be grown in agricultural areas: they can be grown on seawater or  on residual nutrients. Moreover, microalgae have a high areal productivity and via biorefinery the algal biomass can be fractionated into several highly interesting commercial products.

Production costs are still high and technology for production of microalgae is still immature, but if developed it is expected that biomass can be produced at commercial scale and competitive costs for bulk products in the next 10 to 15 years.

The AlgaePARC pilot facility has been built in 2010-2011 with funding from the Province of Gelderland and Ministry of Economic affairs. AlgaePARC’s goal is to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications.

The pilot facility and the existing fundamental research program allowed the implementation of many new projects and programs in the last three years. Projects have been established on the entire production chain - at fundamental and pilot scale - together with industrial partners, aimed at speeding up commercial implementation of this process in our society.

Ambition and future plans

Our  ambition is to strengthen the global position of AlgaePARC as an innovation centre and keep fostering commercial implementation of this process. For this we would like to follow-up on existing activities and start new ones in cooperation with multiple industrial partners (local and international SME’s, large companies). The open workshop is aimed at discussing past and recent achievements and future plans
