Samenvatting (Engelstalig)

Milk production in Malaysia increased over the past decade, however the growth was insufficient to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The goal of this PhD was to analyze the various sources of inefficiency in the Malaysian dairy supply chain, in order to find out how more domestic milk can be produced, marketed and sold with less inputs required. The results indicate that there is great scope for improvement at various supply chain levels: at farm stage, at the marketing channel level, at the level of the main milk marketer in Malaysia (PPIT) and from a whole supply chain perspective. Besides the business and research implications, the findings of this research are particularly relevant for the Malaysian government that has set an ambitious target of having 10% self-sufficiency in dairy production by 2020.
