Samenvatting (Engelstalig)

Since the mid-20th Century, the Arctic is warming about two times faster than the rest of the world. Apart from a dominant impact on the local weather and climate, its influence has been extended beyond the polar region. In order to identify the drivers of Arctic climate change and the connections between the Arctic and global climate system, it is important to understand the Arctic weather and climate.

This research is mainly about understanding the climate system in the Arctic region and trying to improve weather forecast with novel statistical approaches. An emphasis is placed on the Arctic sea ice given its essential role in the global weather and climate system. We focus on the key processes dominating the variability of sea ice in the Arctic and therefore provide physical insights into the predictability of sea ice, which is then used to improve sea ice forecast through deep learning techniques.
