Orion Wing, 12:30-13:30 - Gender is one of those things everyone thinks they understand, but most people don’t. Gender isn’t binary. It’s not either/or. In many cases it’s both/and, a dash of that. It is a (social) construct with multiple layers. Gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, and sexual orientation are independent of one another (i.e., they are not connected). People’s sexual orientation doesn’t determine their gender expression. And their gender expression isn’t determined by their gender identity. And their gender identity isn’t determined by their biological sex. And also, every other mismatch of A isn’t determined by B combination you can dream up from those inputs. Those things certainly affect one another (i.e., they are related to one another), but they do not determine one another. A nice tool to visualize is this the Genderbread Person. SHOUT, the LGBTQ+ association, will give you the opportunity to bake/decorate your own Genderbread cookie. Learn more about the different parts of gender and find out for yourself where you are on the spectra of sex, gender expression, gender identity and sexual and romantic attraction.
