Short summary

With depleting fossil feedstocks and associated environmental problems, it is necessary to search for renewable and sustainable alternatives as a feedstock for chemicals. For chemicals biomass is the only viable alternative feedstock. In this project, wastewater originating from the agro-food industry was used as a feedstock to produce bulk chemicals.

Wastewater can be treated by bacteria to accumulate insoluble polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). PHB can be isolated from wastewater containing diverse organic compounds. PHB can be used as a plastic material, however where PHB is not suitable as a plastic, it can be effectively converted to industrial chemicals. In this study I found a conversion route of PHB to chemicals circumventing extensive purification.
