On 25 June Marco Janssen (homepage) will give an invited talk on “The fragility of cooperation in a world of change” within the context of Complex Adaptive Systems.
Abstract: Both globalization and global environmental change are generating a highly connected global-scale system in which decisions at small scales are influenced by and will influence processes at the global scale in unpredictable and novel ways. How do those developments affect farming communities and what are ways to increase adaptive capacity? In this presentation I present results from field experiments in rice producing irrigation communities in China, Colombia, Thailand and Nepal. These experiments aim to test whether collective action is negatively affected by increased risks and the level of market integration of the communities. Furthermore, I present results from a study in Andhra Pradesh, India, where field experiments are used to stimulate collective action to cope with ground water depletion.
After Marco’s talk we will present some projects from our Complex Adaptive Systems program and discuss them with Marco.
The location is room C0068 in the “Leeuwenborch” building, Hollandseweg 1 in Wageningen.
