The few plants that can survive desiccation of their leaves and stems, use the same ‘survival genes’ as most of the world’s plants use to make their seeds very tolerant to desiccation and heat. The activity of the genes differ between leaves & stems on one side and seeds on the other.

Maria Dias Costa will defend her PhD thesis that states these conclusions at Wageningen University on 8 January 2016. The findings of Maria Dias Costa may be helpful for the development of crops that can survive longer periouds of drought an heat.
