In the battle against hunger we need to improve food production in order to get enough for 8 billion people in 2050. But who has to produce our food when family farmers don’t get reasonable rewards for their specific knowledge and skills? Nearly enough to survive, let alone to innovate. Will we have sufficient farmers for the future food production? Or are they pushed out of traditional agriculture? Just like in the fifties in the Netherlands ‘small’ farmers were pushed towards the factories and are we now acknowledging the extinction of the farmer on a global scale? Is there still a future for the family farm or is it only a matter of diversity and quality? And do they have to go for niche markets? Ruerd Ruben will give a global oversight of the major trends and development pathways.
