Integrated urban greenhouses
In densely populated cities where land prices are sky-rocketing, rooftops offer a new promising window of opportunities. All over the world those previously unused spaces are rediscovered for various purposes. Rooftop gardens and recreational areas has already been here for a while. Integrated urban greenhouses are new, cool kid on the block. This new way of bringing food production to the cities, contributes to more healthy diets of the urban citizens and offers a possibility to close the energy, water and CO2 flows within one building.
Fertile-city is an unique project aiming at analyzing opportunities for the integration of greenhouses on the rooftops of the buildings. It has been run for the last three years by Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Dr. Xavier Gabarrell Durany (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona) will talk about suprising and promising the results of this project.
