The title of the lecture of Lars Hein is: Ecosystem services and environmental change: from ecosystem accounting to environmental management.
There is a broad recognition that society needs to move towards more sustainable ecosystem management. This is not going to be easy and better information on the status of ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people is needed. Ecosystem accounting allows monitoring ecosystem capital, shows how changes in ecosystems affect economic activity and facilitates the design of better ecosystem management approaches. This lecture presents the concepts underlying ecosystem accounting, how the accounts can support ecosystem management, and which further steps are needed to operationalise ecosystem accounting.
