Since 2014, aquaculture produces more food from aquatic animals than fisheries. However, the sector is still highly dependent upon the limited supply of wild-caught fish for sourcing a key feed ingredient called fish oil. Increasing and volatile prices for fish oil have become particularly problematic for the salmon farming industry, which is the largest aquaculture user of this ingredient. In the light of recent breakthroughs in algae cultivation, it is expected that algal oil will eventually become commercially available as a cost-effective alternative. The critical question is when this will happen.
