Lecture Frank Westerman; Wij, de mens (Dutch)

Who are we? September 2003. In a cave on Flores, Indonesia, the fossil of a primordial woman less than a metre tall was discovered. All around her were skeletons of rats as big as dogs, elephants as small as ponies and an extinct giant stork measuring 1 meter 80. What does this mirror world tell us about who we are and where we came from?

We all thrash our tails on the water but, unlike the whale, we humans believe that our splashing actually matters.
Frank Westerman

Wij, de mens takes its reader on a philosophical journey from the valley of the Maas River to the volcanic hillsides of Indonesia. The stakes are high, because if we stand at the highest level in the animal kingdom, what are the things that make us distinct?

The lecture will be in Dutch.
