Lunchpresentation: European self-sufficiency for feed

For decades, Europe’s animal feed producers relied heavily on soy sourced from overseas, as they need cost effective proteins. In recent years however, there is growing interest in only sourcing locally in Europe. Ruud Tijssens, Director Public & Cooperative Affairs of Royal Agrifirm Group, discusses where the move towards European self-sufficiency in animal feed comes from.

As a multinational producer of animal feed, Agrifirm knows the challenges and opportunities of shifting ingredient sourcing from global to local. Ruud Tijssens will look at opportunities for Europe to close its thirty-year development gap in protein production. How dependent is the feed industry on soy and what are viable alternatives from European origin? What is the speed of innovation and how can the industry deal with increasing pressure form demanding retailers? And what is Europe anyway? In his though-provoking presentation, Ruud Tijssens points out that for European self-sufficiency, a clear understanding of both the terms of trade and the political agenda are direly needed.
