Summary

Moving towards a biobased economy, it is important to develop sustainable methods of industrial chemical synthesis. One way to achieve this is by using enzymatic catalysis. To facilitate the industrial application of enzymes, it is important to obtain a thorough understanding of how they work and how we can adapt them so as to suit the needs of an industrial process. The research in this thesis focusses on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which a specific class of enzymes, flavin-dependent oxidases, catalyse chemical reactions, how we can modify them so as to be more suitable for use in industrial processes and how they can be applied to produce chemicals on a synthetically-relevant scale. Our results further our understanding of the mode of action of these enzymes and will be of use for their application in industrial chemical synthesis.
