NVIVO-based qualitative data coding and management training for social scientist - 2 ECTS

Description:

The training focuses on NVivo fundamentals, including developing a coding structure, data coding procedures, and running queries using NVivo software. However, additional data analysis and management practices will also be reviewed to facilitate the use of the software and an accurate presentation of results. These comprise i) an overview of key concepts related to systematic content analysis, ii) basic data management principles, and iii) a standard process to begin cross-case analysis in NVivo.

Activities:

A mix of presentations, NVivo demonstrations, group and individual practical exercises, reflection sessions, walkshops, and daily (home) assignments will be used throughout the course to ensure learning. Furthermore, a Simple Query Manual specifically developed to accompany the course will be shared with the participants to reinforce the query principles, and to act as a step-by-step guide to allow for independent analysis using NVivo.

Requirements:

• Background in qualitative methods
• Access to a laptop (not Mac)
• Prior (basic) knowledge on gender studies, innovation systems, and agricultural/natural resource management (NRM) is preferred

Learning goals:

This is a hands-on course. After successful completion, participants are expected to i) have developed their own NVivo research project; and ii) to be able to immediately apply their new skills and NVivo knowledge into their own research.

• To strengthen the analytical capacities of the participants with regards to (large) comparative qualitative data;
• Upgrade their methodological skills through systematic content analysis;
• Conduct more rigorous qualitative analysis with the help of NVivo software.

Tea, coffee and fruit will be provided during the breaks, but it is expected you make your own arrangements for lunch. We strongly discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles for water and commend you to bring your own thermos or other types of water containers.
