When they hold both “hands”, they form a chemical dancing pair. Boronic acids are very useful in science and medicine, but first one needs to make them. And while making them, one needs to detect them. To detect boronic acids, we used alizarin, a very special diol: when alizarin forms a dancing pair with a boronic acid, “he” shines like a white shirt under nightclub black lights. Thus, “he” stands out from the crowd and you know where “miss” boronic acid was hiding. Very handy!
