The debut of the now famous German thinker Peter Sloterdijk, Critique of Cynical Reason, had a large impact in and outside the philosophical world. Thirty years later, after the disappearance of the Soviet Union and the rise of China, the new cynicism of Abu Ghraib, the rise of gene- and neurotechnologies, and of the ecological crisis and digitalization of society, the book still is very actual.
Tonight the young philosophers Pieter Lemmens and Sjoerd van Tuinen will go into dialogue about the thinking of this high-explosive philosopher. They will concentrate on how the socio-critical stance of his work developed into a new – spherological and immunological – perspective on the human being. And put it in line with his more recent work on self-domestication, asceticism and the imperative that we have to change our way of living against the backdrop of the current global crisis.
