Globally coerced. The truck system in Louisiana and the Netherlands 1865-1920

Abstract:

In the nineteenth century laborers throughout the world experienced a specific form of labor coercion: the truck system. However,  the majority of historians have viewed the truck system as something more or less unique of their research area. In this paper, I will make a global comparison between truck systems by focusing on two cases: the peat stores in the Netherlands, and plantation stores in Louisiana. Few historians have conducted research on these stores, and quantitative analyses of the existing data is lacking. In this paper I will show the first results of my analysis of my data: a database with payment information of 885 Louisiana plantation laborers, and the analysis of the Dutch parliamentary survey of 1891.
