Dynamics of coercion. Forced labour and convict systems in the Dutch East Indies, c. 1680-1940
This paper investigates the history of forced internment and coerced labour in the Netherlands-Indies from the seventeenth into the middle of the twentieth century. The paper will outline practices of forced interment and coerced labour, connecting it legal and penal regimes and their impact on (coercive) labour relations in a colonial setting. For this, it will employ sources from the Dutch East India Company (18th century) and from the Dutch Colonial Government (19th and 20th century).
