Source Separated Sanitation is based on separate collection, transport and treatment of toilet wastewater and the rest of the household wastewater. It aims at the maximal recovery of resources that are present in wastewater, including energy, nutrients and water itself. Reuse of wastewater and digested biosolids, as proposed by Source Separated Sanitation, can lead to the contamination of the fresh water, soil and agricultural products with organic micropollutants. These compounds include pharmaceuticals, hormones, personal care and household products. They have a negative impact on the environment, such as feminization of male organisms or carcinogenic effects. This PhD project aims at the improvement of micropollutant removal within Source Separated Sanitation. The removal in the existing pilot-scale treatment systems and possibilities for their upgrade with additional treatment steps was researched.
