How does a movie offer us access to a personage? And how ‘real’ can our feelings towards him or her be? Using a series of fascinating movie-scenes, ‘De Volkskrant’ film critic Kevin Toma explores our relationship to ‘the other’ in the movie.
When we talk about a movie we tend to start by discussing the characters. Could we identify with them? Did we feel aversion? But what is identification exactly? If we sympathize with a person in a film, are these feelings ‘real’? Which are the limits of this identification, and to what extent can a movie bring us closer to the other?
Kevin Toma invites us to discuss these questions, and more. We are guided by scenes from films like Inglorious Bastards, Another Year, Code inconnu and Still Alice.
About Kevin Toma
Kevin Toma (Sittard, 1974) studied Film- and Performance-Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen. Currently he works as a film critic for De Volkskrant. Furthermore he composes modern music for, and accompanies silent movies. He wrote new scores for and accompanied live among others Sunrise (1927), Häxan (1922) and Berlin, die Sinfonie der Groβstadt (1927).
