SG-activity - Democracy under pressure: The pressure of democracy

We live in hard times for democracy. This last decade we saw phenomena like Pirate Parties, Occupy, Syriza, Indignados and Nuit Debout; like Golden Dawn and Pegida, and also the changing image of Erdogan, the impeachment of Dilma Roussef, the polarisation around Trump, and not to forget the Brexit referendum and so on and so forth.

But, what do we mean, and what do we do, when we say “democracy”? We seem to have a lot of different shapes of democracy in today’s world: from parliamentary monarchy to republican representation. Is democracy only about elections with the one man, one vote rule? Doesn’t that lead to all kinds of tensions in the system and in society? Especially in modern times with new players like the multinational powers and the media.

prof dr. E. van der Zweerde (Radboud University) will tell us all about it.
