The Tokay String Trio plays music of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods as well as music of the 20th century. Here in Impulse they play compositions by the famous composers Schubert and Beethoven, but also by the Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi.
Dohnányi was the musical equivalent of a living fossil. Even though he died only in 1960, he was stimulated to become a musician by none other than Johannes Brahms. It was not until composing his string trio that Dohnányi was able to shake off the influence of the great Brahms and find his own musical style.
Both Schubert and Beethoven started their most creative career phase with their string trio compositions. During the early stages of his career, Beethoven had worked in the shadows of the great composers Haydn and Mozart. It was Haydn and Mozart’s quartets that would provide the model for other composers, and the young Beethoven didn’t want to risk getting his fingers burnt by composing string quartets yet. Instead he composed music for a rather unusual setting: the string trio. Also Schubert composed two string trio’s before he got to his famous string quartets (such as Death and the Maiden and Rosamunde). Both Schubert and Beethoven stopped composing string trio’s after they started composing their stunning string quartet repertoire.
Tokay String Trio
The Tokay String Trio was established in 2018 and consists of a violinist (Ingrid Lubbers), a violist (Cobi Berculo) and a cellist (Jaap Sytsma). The name “Tokay” is taken from Hungarian folk music: a boisterous foxtrot, which apparently has its origin in a village of the same name. The three musicians feel this name symbolizes their enthusiasm playing music together. Maybe even more interesting is the fact that Tokay is also the name of the sublime wines from the Tokaj region in Hungary; wines which are greatly appreciated by the three musicians. The Tokay String Trio performs on November 22 at 19.00 in Impulse. Admission is free, donations are appreciated.
