In the light of current challenges, such as the energy transition and the circular economy, the need for urban and rural areas to join forces on an equal base is increasingly important. However, in order to develop successful transition strategies and policies it is important to understand and recognize the differences between cities and the countryside, as well as the opportunities for synergies.
