Gerard Op het Veld on piano and Fons Plasschaert on the violin. They play compositions by the well known Dutch 20th Century composer Leon Orthel.
Gerard Op het Veld (1946), born in Maastricht, had his first piano lessons at the age of 8 from Mrs. Clemens-van der Horst. During high school he had piano and organ lessons from Louis Cuypers, at that time director of the Institute for Church Music in Utrecht. While studying French language and literature at the Catholic University Nijmegen (CUN) he had as second study musicology. During and after his student days he continued to have piano lessons from prof. A. Asselbergs, professor in music sciences at the CUN. Thereafter his teacher was Frits Jellema, at the Music School in Arnhem. From 1974 until 1990 Gerard Op het Veld was music reporter for the Gelderlander newspaper. Since 2000 he is member of the board of Nijmegen Society for Chamber Music.
Fons Plasschaert (1942), born in Helmond, learned to play the violin since he was nine from Dick Blokbergen in Hilversum. In his student days in Utrecht he was for six years concertmaster of the Utrecht Students Choir and Orchestra. From 1976 to 2007 he was concertmaster of the Nijmegen Symphony Orchestra (earlier on Nymegen Chamber Orchestra),. From 1981 until 1993 he was the leader of the Animato-string quartet and since 1993 he plays the first violin in the Valkhof-stringquartet. Since 1967 he was a teacher and researcher at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Catholic University (renamed Radboud UMC). He was since 1976 full professor in dentistry. During the period 1990-1994 he was Rector Magnificus (Vice-Chancellor). Since 1986 he is also violin mnaker. The violin he plays has been made by himself in 1995.Gerard Op het Veld and Fons Plasschaert form a duo since 1999 and perform regularly together mainly the classical romantic repertoire.
