On Wednesday 16 September the board of the Wageningen Alumni Chapter Indonesia organised an alumni meeting in Bogor on Sustainability issues, a changing environment and its impact on livestock.
On Wednesday 16 September 2015 the Wageningen Alumni Chapter of Indonesia held another successful networking event at IPB in Bogor. About 40 people attended the afternoon session.
Two renowned guest speakers spoke about Sustainability Issues and Changing Environment and its impact on livestock. Prof. Bas Kemp of the Department of Animal Sciences of the Wageningen University gave a presentation on “Resilient animals: How to prepare animals for future environmental challenges?”. His presentation focussed on the early life environment of animals and what kind of consequences this has later on production and reproduction. He gave interesting examples for the attendants to understand what these impacts are. For example about the stress chicken have and what that does to the development of their offspring.
After that Haiko Zuidhoff, who is the General Manager Asia Pacific at Trouw Nutrition, gave a presentation on “Sustainable Livestock Farming”. Mr Zuidhoff spoke on challenges that mankind faces with regard to the ability to feed an ever growing population and a quickly growing middle class in many countries of the world. When people move out of poverty they tend to get a larger proportion of their food from animal sources. This poses big challenges as there is an increased demand to feed these animals. There is competition over food for animals and food for humans, which becomes more scarce.
After a good Q/A session we concluded the networking event with some drinks, snacks and meeting new and old friends.
