Samenvatting (Engelstalig)

Different beverages have shown varying associations with cardiometabolic health in population-based cohort studies due to their diverse nutritional composition. Studies on these associations in patients with cardiometabolic diseases (CMD), however, are limited. Survivors from a myocardial infarction (MI) may have different beverage requirements because of the underlying disease process, altered (energy) metabolism and/or interactions with medications. Therefore, research on the adherence to healthy beverage guidelines in post-MI patients is warranted. Additionally, there is a lack of research on the role of overall beverage intake quality in relation to CMD.

This thesis focused on the study of beverages relevant for the primary and secondary prevention of CMD. Aims of this thesis were: (i) to study associations between individual beverages and (ii) to study overall beverage quality and risk of CMD in prospective cohort studies of healthy and patient populations, mainly from the Netherlands and additionally from Mexico.
