Samenvatting

Fatis one of the three macronutrients in our diet, which is used either as an
energy source or as a structural component of membranes and other cellular structures.Once taken up into the body, lipids are transported and metabolically processedto fulfill these two major roles. Although adipocytes and monocytes/macrophageshave very different functions in the body, they each can take up, store, andcatabolize lipids. Altered lipid metabolism in adipocytes and
monocytes/macrophages is a hallmark of several major diseases, including
obesity and cardiovascular disease. The understanding of the impact and regulatorypathways of fatty acids in these cells is of fundamental importance to sightinto the pathology of these diseases, as well as physiological behaviors of the
cells.
