Did you ever wonder what happens to you when you listen music? Music stimulates many parts of our brains, and can be regarded as a ‘full brain workout’. How does this exactly affect us? In this lecture we will focus on the influence of music on the individual and look at the effects of music on the brain. Delve into the world of neuromusicology and learn what music does with our state of mind and our functioning. Can music make us smarter, enhance our productivity, or improve our quality of life? Is it possible to use music as a substitute for medicines like painkillers, anaesthetics, sedatives, or antidepressants? And what role can music play in dealing with disorders such as autism, dementia or depression?
About Artur C. Jaschke
Dr. Artur C. Jaschke has obtained his Bachelor degree in Music (Contrabass and Drums) at Dartington College of Arts (United Kingdom) and the University of Otago (New Zealand). During this period he already developed a strong interest in music cognition and the neurology of music, which led him to complete his Master’s degree at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the Netherlands), in Musicology and Music Cognition (thesis title: Controlled Freedom: Cognitive Economy versus Hierarchical Organization in jazz improvisation).
Currently he is researcher Clinical Neuromusicology at the VU University Amsterdam in the department of Clinical Neuropsychology, specializing in the interrelation of music, executive functions and brain maturation in clinical and non-clinical populations. In addition, he is visiting researcher Cognitive Neuroscience of Music at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University Medical Center Groningen. He is involved in MuzIC, a research project that investigates the effects of live music on patients in Intensive Care units. Additionally, he is associate professor (lector) Music-based Therapies and Interventions at the department of Music Therapy at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Enschede.
