Better onions

As the second-most popular vegetable on the planet, onions are an important source of vitamins and minerals for people around the world. New species of onion that grow in poor soil or that are resistant to fungus will greatly increase food security. Researchers from Wageningen have been working together with companies to sequence the genome of the onion.

The resulting DNA map will enable them to pinpoint the beneficial qualities of the onion much more rapidly and accurately, which in turn will allow for the breeding of onions that are more adaptable to changing circumstances. This is yet another example of how Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
