C. elegans as model organism for health effects and dietary interventions

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is widely used as a model organism, especially to understand molecular pathways and the effects of important developmental processes (e.g. apoptosis). However, C. elegans can also be used as a predictive platform; what are the health effects of an altered diet?

We work together with the Houtkooper group at the Amsterdam UMC to test the effect of dietary interventions on the metabolome and life- and health-span of C. elegans, with the ultimate goal to translate these findings to mammalian systems.

Techniques that will be used:

• Working with the model organism C. elegans

• Lifespan / movement assays

• Working with mutants and genetic variation

  • Quantitative analysis (in R or Excel)
