Many young people today drink excessive amounts of alcohol. This is not exactly healthy. Wageningen communication scientists wondered whether a TV drama about the disadvantages of alcohol could discourage alcohol abuse.
They concluded that it could, provided the viewers felt emotionally involved with the story and characters. The events also need to relate closely to their own lives. Identifying with the story allowed the young viewers to "experience" the disadvantages of alcohol abuse. This too is one of the ways Wageningen UR is working on improving quality of life.
