Thesis subject

Evaluation of water demand management strategies in the tourism sector (or more specifically: in coastal mass tourism destinations)

The Environmental Systems Analysis Group provides the possibility for students to do their thesis in collaboration with our group. This is one of many possible thesis subjects. Please feel free to contact Maria Reyes Peres MSc PhD (right) for more information.

SIMTWIST (Simulating tourism water consumption with stakeholders) is a three-year European project that aims to inform tourism decision-makers about the effectiveness of a variety of measures to reduce tourism’s water consumption. The project aims to 1) estimate tourism’s share in current and future macro-level water scarcity in the Mediterranean, and 2) study and simulate water-related behaviour of tourism stakeholders at the micro-level. The project has two case-study areas: Benidorm and Rimini.

This thesis project entails: 1) performing a literature review of all the available/missing water demand management strategies in the tourism sector (global, European and regional level); 2) improving an available policy database of existing literature; 3) Categorize the existing measures.
