Healthy soil is the basis for a good harvest. Chemicals were used in the past to keep soil free of harmful nematodes and disease-causing fungi. Wageningen researchers came up with an alternative method for soil decontamination.
In collaboration with business, they treat the soil with a plant-based substance and then cover it. The soil will proceed to use up the remaining oxygen, which in turn kills off unwanted nematodes and fungi in an eco-friendly manner. A plot thus treated will remain productive and healthy for at least a decade. This is how Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
