Identification of possible indicators for a societal sustainability assessment of the Patio system for broilers - Audrey Burkard

The aim of this study was assess the societal sustainability performance of a multi-tier broiler production system, the Patio system. Stakeholders were identified and by using their published documents, issues in broiler production in the Netherlands were identified. Additionally, indicators were determined by using literature. Next, research data available within Vencomatic B.V., the company that developed the Patio system, was evaluated for possible use for the societal sustainability assessment.

In this study issues and possible indicators in broiler production in the Netherlands are identified to be able to assess the societal sustainability performance of a multi-tier broiler production system, the Patio system. Stakeholders were identified and by using their published documents, issues in broiler production in the Netherlands were identified and their relevance discussed. Additionally, indicators were determined by using literature. Next, research data available within Vencomatic B.V., the company that developed the Patio system, was evaluated for possible use for the societal sustainability assessment. Image, animal welfare and public health were the three main sustainability issues identified.

With regards to the data, 13 out of 55 internal researches were found to indirectly measure information relevant for a societal sustainability assessment; however, looking at reliability of the researches and the available results on the local network, it was revealed that the data could not readily be used. Some data can be used from other sources such as the climate computer in the Patio or external sources such as the slaughterhouse. In conclusion, practices with regards to conducting research within Vencomatic B.V. need to be changed to be able to collect data that can be used to quantify indicators suitable for a societal sustainability assessment. Moreover, data gaps need to be closed in order to cover all issues. The establishment of thresholds for indicators is important for the interpretation of the data collected but also with regards to the decision on which indicators and units of measurements to use.
