In Burundi, soil degradation, climate change, and the aftermath of a civil war have resulted in an unstable food supply. Wageningen University researchers work alongside farming families to increase agricultural production and sustainable entrepreneurship.
The key word is collaboration, as this gives farmers the courage and tools to invest in new crops and soil and cultivation techniques. These pioneers in turn inspire fellow farmers and share the knowledge gained. Within a year, four out of five families in a village become more successful farmers, with higher income and access to microcredit. This is also how Wageningen UR helps improve their quality of life.
