Learning from the Great Tit

The personality of birds gives a good indication of their social behaviour. Together with colleagues at other institutions, researchers from Wageningen have analysed the social structure of great tits using light-weight transmitters attached to the birds’ backs. Brazen males of this common garden bird species are the most likely to seek out their peers.

The team think that this behaviour allows them to find out more about feeding places, rivals and predators. Knowledge from the natural environment helps us to predict the consequences for animals if their social structure disintegrates because of an increasingly fragmented living environment, for example. Yet another way that Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
