MSc thesis topics: Estimating above ground biomass of palms in tropical forests using RGB UAV imagery

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide a flexible method for acquiring high-resolution imagery with relative simple operation and cost-effectiveness, especially in remote areas. With the Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithm, it is possible to obtain a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and an orthomosaic from UAV RGB images from a surveyed area. In some cases it is also possible to derive the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and thus, to obtain a Canopy Height Model (CHM).

By knowing the height of the palm trees it is possible to estimate the above ground biomass of them, but How accurate is the Canopy Height Model generated from images taken with a commercial UAV (DJI Phantom 4 Pro)? Is the accuracy good enough to estimate above ground biomass of palm trees in a tropical forest? If so, this method could save a lot of time in terms of forest ground measurements.
