Does a large variety of plant and tree species help to capture more carbon? Researchers of tropical forests have been busy with this question for a while. Researchers of Wageningen University & Research collected together with international colleagues data of more than hundred thousand tropical trees and compared the variety of species in those forests.
They concluded that a large biodiversity causes a sharp increase in total biomass, even in tropical forests that are ultra rich in species. For this, they argue that forests and biodiversity should play a central role at COP21 in Paris. Through this research Wageningen UR works on quality of life.
