Dunes are very important in protecting The Netherlands against the sea. Therefore, much effort goes into dune management. However, studies of Wageningen UR researchers show that the dunes on East Ameland also remain high and wide enough if nature runs its course. The coastal area even recovers itself from storm damage.
This shows that nature development and coastal security can go hand in hand. The landscape on East Ameland has changed from dunes full of sand screens and planted vegetation into a beautiful, natural - and yet secure - coastal strip. This is how Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
