Vanilla is one of the world’s most expensive spices. As the price, quality and supply of this tropical natural product fluctuate considerably, however, this aroma is often imitated.
Wageningen researchers are working with the business community on the cultivation of the vanilla orchid in greenhouses. Such controlled cultivation in greenhouses allows the horticulturalist to produce quality vanilla and to regulate the vanillin content. This also means ‘nethervanilla’ could help in the development of a drug against the yeast infection candida. Yet another way Wageningen UR is working on the quality of life.
