Publication: Release of isothiocyanates does not explain the effects of biofumigation with Indian mustard cultivars on nematode assemblages

Brassicas receive considerable attention as biofumigants; incorporation of mulched plant material was suggested to suppress of a wide range of soil-borne plant pathogens.

We investigated in considerable detail the effects of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) on plant-parasitic and free-living nematodes. Although strong effects of physical disturbance of the top soil and green manuring were observed, we did not see any effect that could be attributed to glucosinolates and/or their derivatives.
