In the previous century, many streams were straightened to improve flow. As an unwanted consequence, the land around these streams dried out and native flora and fauna disappeared. This prompted Wageningen UR researchers to write a manual for restoring streams without causing floods.
By following the manual's step-by-step plan for the design of more natural stream beds, water administrators can enable streams totalling over a thousand kilometres to once again meander, retain more water and make the surrounding nature thrive. This is how Wageningen UR improves the quality of life.
