Rooster on the menu

Eggs intended to produce new laying hens don’t just produce pullets, but also cockerels. These male chicks currently end up as animal feed. Wageningen UR researchers, together with the Ministry, poultry farmers and distributors reflected on an animal-friendly future for day-old cockerels.

A good alternative is to rear these chicks. After thirteen weeks the rooster meat has a delicate flavour and a firm bite. Their meat has inspired chefs to create new recipes for roosters that have had a fuller life; just one example of how Wageningen UR is working on improving the quality of life.
