Sampling strategy of herring larvae

Wageningen Marine Research is looking for a student who will join one or more herring larvae surveys to collect plankton samples at sea. You would upon return sort and identify the plankton samples for herring larvae. After that, data analyses will be carried out in order to estimate the number of larvae that need to be identified and measured in a sample to come to a reliable estimate of the total number of herring larvae. If time allows, you will also look into the sampling strategy that is currently adopted for the herring larvae surveys.

Yearly Wageningen Marine Research carries out 3 herring larvae cruise to estimate the spawning stock of North Sea herring. Some samples contain over 10.000 herring larvae. Therefore subsampling is needed. The international states that at least 200 larvae need to be measured in each sample. There is however no statistics behind this.
