Soil life in action

Healthy soil is full of life. Bacteria, fungi and soil organisms make nutrients in the soil available for vegetation and can halt the development of plant diseases. However, these small, slow-moving and lucifugous organisms cannot be seen. Despite this secretive nature, researchers at Wageningen UR have revealed the hidden underground world in time-lapse films, which also show the interaction between plant roots and soil life. The live images show viewers the activities going on underground, as well as why good soil management is important for agricultural production and nature. Wageningen UR uses knowledge gained from this footage to help improve the quality of life.
