Dairy cows that stay healthy and productive until a very late age, without the use of antibiotics. That is what Wageningen UR scientists are working on to make milk production more sustainable. They analyse the DNA of hundreds of bulls - ancestors of all Dutch dairy cows - to learn more about the genetic predisposition of today's cows.
For decades, dairy cow breeding was all about increasing the milk production. Now, reducing the use of antibiotics has become an issue, too. DNA analyses help to find the genes for strong, healthy cows that are able to remain productive until they are old. This is how Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
