800 thousand tons of perfectly fine food is thrown away in the Netherlands every year. This is equivalent to three hundred refuse trucks per day or 150 euros per person per year. Even though this food is not consumed, its production and transport negatively impact the environment. Wageningen UR researchers are making consumers aware of this waste.
In the FoodBattle, work colleagues and neighbours keep track of the food they throw away during a three-week period and get practical tips to prevent waste. This results in about 30% less waste, a sustainable effect that saves money and benefits the environment. This is how Wageningen UR improves the quality of life.
